Know Discrimination: help your clients to fight it

Know Discrimination was a series of free awareness raising training sessions for voluntary and community organisations (VCOs) providing information and support in North Yorkshire. Participants attending sessions are provided with a toolkit so they can cascade the training to colleagues within their own organisation.

The Forum, in partnership with Advice North Yorkshire (ANY), delivered the training and created this toolkit thanks to funding from the EHRC (Equalities and Human Rights Commission).

The main outcome of this funded project, which ran until March 2011, is to promote wider understanding of equality and human rights within North Yorkshire.

The training sessions have now finished but we are making the valuable resources created during the project available through the sections below. The toolkit will enable cascade trainers to deliver awareness training to their colleagues during a staff meeting, in a lunchtime briefing, or as a one-hour or four-hour training session. Anyone can register for the email list, see details below for how to subscribe.

[March 2011: NB we signpost and refer to materials / resources provided by other organisations and these may be updated or replaced at any time. Always check with the publisher for the latest version].

Toolkit
Those who attended one of the free training sessions were encouraged to cascade train their colleagues using the toolkit provided. This is available for VCOs to access via this website as downloadable files and content on request. Please click on the links below to find out more.

Resources

Each downloadable file below provides a range of information and resources to support the cascade training and enhance learning and development.

The list of websites and useful contacts should be used in conjunction with the Resources and Publications files.

Websites and Useful Contacts

Resources
To support your learning and as part of preparing to deliver your cascade training session the guides listed are recommended.

Publications
The publications listed are available to download free of charge from the organisation indicated via the weblink; some can be ordered in hard copy – mostly at no cost. It is suggested that you browse the list and order or download copies to use as appropriate for your organisation in preparation for delivering your cascade training session. You should also refer to the Resources list for recommended tools to compliment your learning. This handout should be used in conjunction with the Useful Contacts & websites list. This list is not exhaustive, merely a selection of publications available with suggested topics of interest.

Next Steps
If you have identified a case for discrimination, what do you do next? There are a number of resources that can help you decide - this handout also provides an overview of 'assertive confrontation'. Also, a good starting point is the guide from isthatdiscrimination.org.uk “You don’t have to put up with it! How to deal with discrimination” available to download from www.advicenow.org.uk/is-that-discrimination/ The guide explains the steps you can take and the organisations that can help you to put an end to unfair treatment.
